Lead Mill flue chimneys - Allendale Town

Allen Lead Smelt Mill was Built in Allendale Town 1n 1692. Between 1786 and 1808 the flues were extended to take poisonous fumes away from the town to the two chimneys onto open moorland two and a quarter miles away.
This picture shows the isolated and lofty moorland setting of the chimneys on Flow moss. With only a raking northerly wind and nervous grouse for company the feeling was of something far older and more meaningful than Industrial flues .

The flues have collapsed on the moors forming these ditches

The weather changed by the minute

Brooding and imposing in wild and remote setting
